So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and in His good time He will honor you. Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about what happens to you. 1 Peter 5:6-7

Humble herself?

This was as humble an existence as he could imagine. How did she keep her spirit alive, keep slaving away when she had only this to look forward to at the end of a long day? How could God allow a woman like Rowena to endure conditions like these?

Connor quietly closed the door behind him. After checking to be sure father and daughter were still in the greenhouse, he pulled out his cell phone and dialed.

“Esther? It’s Connor. I’m so sorry to call you at home but I need some help and I need it fast.”

His unflappable assistant listened, then promised to find him the people he needed.

“It’s going to cost you a lot to have it done so fast,” she said softly.

Connor grimaced. “Money isn’t the issue here, Esther. I can pay whatever it costs.”

The blasted money he’d thought would be his ticket to happiness was little more than a millstone, blindsiding him to what was really important in life—people. He could make more money. That was simple. Helping Rowena without injuring her pride was going to be much more difficult.

“If they can be at Wingate at seven, I’ll add a bonus,” he told her. “I want this done fast and well.”

“Yes, sir.” He could tell Esther was smiling.

There was just one more call to make.

“Uncle Henry, I need you to back me up on something. The nursery house is a disaster and I’m insisting on having it repaired. Rowena balked a little so I told her there was money specially set aside to get the place livable.”

“But we don’t have—”

“I do, Uncle Henry. And I never said it was your money, just that it had to be used on this house.”

“You sound appalled by the place. Are conditions really that bad?”

“Worse. I should have checked it out when I first got here as you asked me to.” But he’d been too busy wallowing in his own selfishness to consider someone else. “I’d like to get her completely out of there while they work but I doubt that will happen. Anyway, I just wanted to be sure you’d back me up.”

“I won’t lie, Connor.”

“I don’t want you to. If she asks, just tell her there’s plenty of money to do the repairs without impinging on Wingate’s renovation.”

Silence greeted his words, then he heard whispers in the background.

“All right, son. If anyone asks, that’s what we’ll say. Is everything else all right? How are you doing—feeling better now?”

He was talking about Cecile. Connor winced, realizing it had been days since he’d even thought about her. Selfish didn’t begin to describe him.

“I’m fine, Uncle Henry. Looking forward to the opening here.”

“We were right about hiring Rowena, weren’t we?”

A certain timbre in Uncle Henry’s voice made him pause before answering. The old boy knew a lot more than he pretended.
